Sensenet determines the odour thresholds of all compounds according to a new methodology developed by Sensenet founder Ton Van Harreveld who is the convenor of the technical committee TC264/WG2 Odours, working on the revision of the EN13725. This revision should come into force in the coming months and should integrate the detail procedure for establishing a robust OTV by using a larger panel and generating data by direct comparison with the olfactory referent (n-butanol):

1 – Sampling

Sampling is carried out with a device called a LiGaVa, which allows any liquid to be vaporized in the gas phase.
Time, volume stream, temperature and amount of liquid being known, the concentration of the compound in the gas phase is perfectly controlled: it is a highly standardised odour sampling system

2 – Olfactometric analyses

The analysis by dynamic olfactometry is based on the determination of the dilution factor required to achieve the detection of an odorous sample by a panel of human subjects.

For the determination of the odour threshold of a compound, the measurement is based on the direct comparison of individual threshold values (ITVs) of the primary reference odorant n-butanol with the ITVs of the odorant tested.

A dataset of 128 ITVs data pairs is collected using 16 selected panel members, each providing 8 values.

3 – Calculation and uncertainties

The OTV of the tested odorant is finally calculated from the proportion of the molar concentrations for n-butanol and the odorant tested at the detection threshold. Calculations and uncertainties associated with the value obtained are determined according to the new version of the EN13725 standard.

What can you do with the OTV?

INGREDIENTS

  • Reduce the overpowering smell of an ingredient
  • Substitute an ingredient
  • Compare the sensory quality of ingredients
  • Recommend the concentration at which an ingredient should be used to be neutral in a base formula or, on the contrary, well perceived
  • Have useful information for setting up ingredient ID card
  • Determine an endpoint for Health and Safety release

MIXTURE

(Base or composition)

  • Optimize product formulation
  • Recommend the concentration at which a base formula should be used to be neutral in a product
  • Recommend the concentration at which a perfumed composition should be used well perceived in a product
  • Have useful information for setting up base or composition ID card

Formula

  • Determination of the use level value of a new perfumery ingredient depending on its odour threshold value
  • Determination of odour thresholds of chemicals in cosmetic formulations to define the concentration of the compound to be active but not overpowering a formula
  • To know the olfactory characteristics of odorous molecules e.g. odour nuisance or off-note issues, for automotive or building sectors for instance
